In France, hotel rankings highlight the exceptional 5-star hotels by elevating them to ‘palace’ status. Awarded to establishments that achieve excellence.

In France, not just any hotel can call itself a Palace. Since 2009, the tourism authorities have officially awarded the Palace distinction to single out the truly exceptional among the country’s 5-star hotels.

Prime location, historical, architectural or heritage interest, tailor-made service: these hotels stand out in every way.

Atout France, the French tourism development agency, is the only body authorised to declare hotels eligible for the Palace distinction. It does so using objective eligibility criteria drawn from the 5-star rating system, which become compulsory for Palace hotels. These include a fitness area, a spa, a multilingual team and a concierge service.

A panel of qualified experts then bases its decision on a range of assessment criteria. These include location, aesthetics, the history of the property, its personality, the team’s commitment to excellence, a gourmet restaurant, an environmental policy and more.
