In the heart of Paris, the Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection brings together historic architecture and contemporary art in a landmark reimagined for the 21st century. Featuring international artistic voices, including influential American artists, it offers a dynamic cultural experience where heritage and contemporary creation converge.
A Historic Landmark Reimagined
The Bourse de Commerce, home to the Pinault Collection, in the heart of Paris.
Originally built in the 18th century as a grain exchange, the Bourse de Commerce later became a center for commodities trading, playing a vital role in Paris’s economic life. Built on the former site of Catherine de’ Medici’s palace, its circular form, crowned by a vast glass dome and panoramic fresco, reflects centuries of architectural transformation. The result is an immersive cultural space where heritage, light, and contemporary creation converge in the heart of Paris.
Architecture: A Dialogue Across Time
Contemporary installation inside the Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection.
The transformation of the building was led by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, whose intervention introduces a striking concrete cylinder at the heart of the rotunda. Minimal yet powerful, this architectural gesture creates a new spatial experience while preserving the integrity of the historic structure.
The result is a seamless interplay between heritage and modernity, where light, volume, and materiality guide visitors through a contemplative and immersive environment.
François Pinault and a Global Collection
The museum presents works from the Pinault Collection, assembled over several decades by French collector François Pinault. One of the world’s leading private collections of contemporary art, it spans a wide range of media and artistic practices.
The collection includes major American artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cindy Sherman, and Kerry James Marshall, reflecting the strong presence of American voices within a global artistic landscape and underscoring the enduring dialogue between France and the United States.
From time to time, I come across a work that really stands out, a striking masterpiece that seems to call out to me, and that is a very good sign.François Pinault
