Set in the heart of the Loire Valley, the Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire blends centuries of history with creativity. From its Renaissance heritage to its ties to the American Revolution, the estate invites visitors to explore a destination shaped by nature, innovation, and a constantly evolving collection of works of art.

A Historic Legacy

Founded around the year 1000 and overlooking the Loire River, the château as we know it today took shape during the 15th and 16th centuries, blending medieval strength with early Renaissance elegance. Over time, it has been home to remarkable figures, including Catherine de' Medici, who acquired the estate in 1550. A powerful and influential queen, she later exchanged Chaumont with her rival Diane de Poitiers for the prestigious Château de Chenonceau, an episode that reflects the political intrigue and personal rivalries of the French court. The château would go on to pass through the hands of notable aristocratic families, each contributing to its evolving architectural and cultural legacy.

Benjamin Franklin’s Transatlantic Ties at Chaumont

A Defining Alliance Between France and the Young American Republic

In the 18th century, the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire entered a defining chapter under Jacques-Donatien Le Ray de Chaumont, a French nobleman whose influence extended far beyond the Loire Valley. A committed supporter of the American cause, he became a key figure in the alliances that helped shape the outcome of the Revolutionary War.

Through his relationship with Benjamin Franklin, Le Ray provided essential financial, logistical, and material support to the American insurgents. From his residence in Passy, the Hôtel de Valentinois, he welcomed Franklin and other envoys, creating a space for exchange and collaboration at a pivotal moment in history. His contributions included commissioning the transformation of a merchant vessel into the warship:USS Bonhomme Richard, as well as supplying provisions and resources to sustain the revolutionary effort.

Following the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1783, Benjamin Franklin remained at the residence in Passy, serving as ambassador for the newly recognized United States. Today, this shared history continues to resonate as a powerful symbol of the enduring ties between France and the United States.
