Postponed for health reasons linked to the coronavirus, the 107th edition of the Tour de France will take place from Saturday August 29 to Sunday September 20, 2020. Despite the unusual timing, the race will be keeping its original route, covering 3,470 kilometers (2156 miles) through 21 stages, with a kick-off held in Nice.
For the first time ever during times of peace, the Tour de France will not take place in July, but mostly in September! The announcement was made on April 15, 2020. "Following declarations by the President of the Republic indicating that there could not be large-scale events in France before mid-July, with the aim of effectively fighting against the spread of the COVID19 epidemic, the organizers of the Tour de France (...) have decided to postpone the Tour, and it will be held from Saturday August 29 to Sunday September 20, 2020," explains the Tour de France press release.
The meeting retains its original route with 3,470 kilometers (2156 miles)to cover in 21 stages. For the 7th time in its history, the Tour will set off in the far south, starting in the beautiful city of Nice! Challenges will await the runners during the first two stages: a tailor-made cut for sprinters and a steeper second, which represents perfect terrain for climbers!
Final climax on the Champs-Elysées
Centered south, the Grande Boucle will then join the Pyrenees, then northern Auvergne, the Alps and Lyon before finally heading to the grand finale on the Champs-Elysées on Sunday, September 22. Emotion, suspense, adrenaline and an intense race against the clock are certain to be co-cyclists in this race!
