Eccentric, scandalous and funny, designer Jean-Paul Gaultier is shaking up Paris with a whole new genre of show, bridging the gap between magazines and catwalk displays, at the Folies Bergères from 2 October–29 December 2018. Experience 50 years of pop culture through the eyes and life of the ‘enfant terrible’ of fashion!
A troupe of 15 actors, dancers and circus performers will be pushed to their limits as they embody a host of crazy, passionate, brattish creatures and personalities chosen by the designer throughout the course of the show, which has already been described as outrageous.
For this Fashion Freak Show, Gaultier plays author, director and scenographer simultaneously, aiming to present “a tender and quirky look back on his time and invite us behind the scenes of his universe, between strokes of genius, excess , poetry and moments of magic”.
A tribute to Gaultier’s inspiration, from Luc Besson to Madonna
From his childhood to the launch of his career, and from his greatest shows to his crazy evenings at the Palace, the extraordinary designer is opening his diary and paying tribute to those who inspired him; through cinema (Pedro Almodovar, Luc Besson), music (Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Mylène Farmer) and dance (Régine Chopinot, Angelin Preljocaj).
For the show, Gaultier has designed dozens of exclusive outfits which are placed in a vibrant scenography, leaving room on stage for a few of the most iconic creations from his repertoire.
He has collaborated with some prominent industry figures to realise this project, including Nile Rodgers for music. As producer and musical director of the show, Rodgers is producing two original soundtracks, plus a main show soundtrack made up of songs chosen by Gaultier.
An explosive playlist
Disco, funk, pop, rock but also new wave and punk: the Fashion Freak Show is also a major musical draw, featuring hits from through the ages that all have relevance for Gaultier.
