It’s the unmissable event on the French Riviera, taking place each year on the Croisette during the sunny season. The International Film Festival, the most prestigious global gathering for cinema, is packed with new films, fresh talent, and glamour. The 78th edition will be held from May 13 to 24, 2025.
Created on the initiative of Jean Zay - Minister of Fine Arts at the time - the first edition of the International Film Festival took place on 20 September 1946.
From 1952 onwards, the Cannes Festival became the annual meeting place of the film world, with the ascent of the steps of the Palais des Festival as a symbol.
The Palme d'Or, the supreme prize awarded by the jury, takes its symbolism from the arms of the city of Cannes.
A festival of reference, many directors have come to present films that have left their mark on the memory, such as Fellini, Bergman, Buñuel or Coppola... Others still have made a name for themselves there, such as Tarantino, Cronenberg, Lars von Trier...
Spotlight on the 78th edition
After Greta Gerwig in 2024, another internationally renowned actress, Juliette Binoche, will chair the Jury at the next Cannes Film Festival. 40 years after her first appearance on the Croisette, the heroine of Rendez-Vous, Copie Conforme and La Passion de Dodin Bouffant will once again take to the steps of the Palais des Festivals as President of the Jury.
Look out for the full line-up of the jury and the films in competition at the Cannes Festival, which runs from 13 to 24 May 2025.
