Nature enthusiasts seeking an ideal vacation spot won’t have to search long. The French Ardennes boast a wealth of eco-friendly activities, stunning forests, and sparkling rivers—all conveniently located nearby! Dust off your bike and lace up your hiking boots, because here are six suggestions for an environmentally friendly getaway in this top-notch northern French eco destination.
Up the mountain by footcar for the best views of the Meuse River

The French Ardennes offer excellent hiking opportunities for both seasoned and novice hikers. A great starting point for beginners is the Meuse Valley, particularly the Route de la Roche à Sept-heures in Monthermé. This 6-kilometer hike features narrow mountain paths through the village and surrounding forests. Along the way, you'll encounter viewpoints like La Roche à Sept-heures and La Grande Roche, where you can enjoy stunning panoramas at 370 meters above sea level. The picturesque meandering river and lush greenery make this 2.5-hour hike well worth your time!
Don't leave a footprint and take the bike

Besides good connections by bus and train (the TGV and TER), you will find an extensive cycling network with many marked routes. Like the new Voie Verte Sud Ardennes, a pleasant 110 km route on the towpath along the Canal des Ardennes. Nature guaranteed! But also the 178 km long cycle route Lesse and Semois, along the most beautiful meanders and through narrow valleys of the region, is a must. The real diehards leave the car at home and take the famous Meuse Cycle Route from the Netherlands or Belgium to the French Ardennes. So hop in the saddle and 'en route' to a small ecological footprint.
Enjoying local delicacies
No French holiday is complete without indulging in the local culinary delights at a charming restaurant. In the Ardennes, you’ll find a delightful array of specialties to savor, such as the refreshing salade au lard (dandelion salad), the comforting bayenne (sliced potatoes with onion), the sweet galette à suc' (sugar cake), and the renowned boudin blanc (white sausage) from Rethel. Many restaurateurs take great pride in showcasing traditional recipes, expertly highlighting the region's fresh, local produce. Our favorites are La Grande Tablée Ardennaise near Charleville-Mézières, La Table de Sandorine in Rethel, and l'Atelier Gourm'hand in Charleville-Mézières!
While eating, or in the evening on a terrace, be sure to taste the Ardennes beer, which has been brewed according to traditional methods in the French Ardennes since the 12th century. Especially recommended are the barley beers from the Abbaye de Signy, brewed in the Signy monastery to an ancient recipe, and from Ardwen.
Do you enjoy searching for the most delicious products on your own? If so, make sure to check out the various markets. This will allow you to connect with local producers and experience the vibrant atmosphere. Throughout the year, the region hosts "Marchés des producteurs de pays" in various locations, including the Place Ducale in Charleville-Mézières (every second Friday of the month), Mouzon (every fourth Friday of the month), and Launois-sur-Vence (every first Friday of the month).
Sleep in your own 'igloo' in the Ardennes countryside
When driving through the countryside of Chuffilly-Roche, you have to blink twice to realize that you haven't landed in the North Pole.
Some cottages at Camping Aux Sabots de Vent may resemble igloos, but they're made from eco-friendly materials like lime walls and hemp floors, giving them a unique round shape. The interiors also embrace sustainability, featuring beds crafted from old pallets and bedding made from organic cotton - perfect for a guilt-free nap!
The combination of ecological design, stunning views, and proximity to the charming town of Haulmé makes it an appealing getaway for nature lovers and those looking to explore the region’s rich heritage. Spending time in a treehouse immersed in the stunning scenery of the Semois Valley, particularly with its elevated views offering awe-inspiring panoramas, is truly enchanting. Whether you choose to bike around the region or simply relax amidst the serenity of the treetops, it serves as an ideal getaway for those seeking to reconnect with nature and find peace.
They also have the 'Ardennes de France' label, which guarantees good quality and know-how. La Grande Tablée Ardennaise near Charleville-Mézières, La table de Sandorine in Rethel, and l'Atelier Gourm'hand in Charleville-Mézières are our favorites!
Does this eco-friendly concept bring you joy? If so, a treehouse at Cabane et Vallée is perfect for you. Located just a short distance from the center of Haulmé, it offers easy access to explore the ecological, historical, and culinary treasures of the region by bike. The campground features several unique treehouses nestled in the heart of the Semois Valley. Both the interiors and exteriors of these accommodations are crafted entirely from wood. Perched twelve meters high, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of the rolling valley while feeling completely connected to nature.
Surfing on the Lac des Vieilles Forges

The Lac des Vieilles Forges, in the middle of the French Ardennes and not far from Charleville-Mézières is one big playground for water lovers. Both children and their nature-loving parents get their money's worth on and around this lake. Besides swimming (in the summer the sandy beach is guarded) you can sail, canoe, kayak and have fun for hours in the water park with inflatable play equipment. But there is also plenty to do on the shores. For example, you can hike around the entire lake, a walk of about 12 km. For the ultimate experience, set your alarm early, grab your supboard and head out on the still wrinkle-free lake at dawn. For a moment alone with the birdsong and the rising sun. You can't start your day any better.
