A unique holiday in the heart of nature on the Canal du Midi

Working around the opening times of its locks, travel at your own rhythm along this incredible structure, a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site built during the reign of Louis XIV.

Along its 241km length, why not enjoy a trip on board a barge-hotel, an excursion boat or cruiser, perhaps spending an hour, a weekend or a week exploring its delights. Different itineraries are possible but all allow you to stop close to local and traditional towns and villages such as Carcassonne and Castelnaudary, with its 17C buildings. For those who enjoy sampling local fare, there’s nothing better than enjoying a delicious cassoulet, or tasting a local wine in one of the many villages home to impressive wine cellars.

Another way to enjoy the canal is by bike along the cycle tracks which run alongside it. Whether you’re a family, couple or group of friends, you can pedal merrily beneath the shade of cooling plane trees. Numerous touring circuits have been created and adapted for visitors, such as the Canal des Deux Mers “green way” (voie verte) which follows the old towpaths along the canal.

It’s also possible to combine sailing and cycle touring by mooring your barge and heading off to explore the surrounding area by bike.

Along the Canal du Midi, the combination of a range of activities, local products, peace and quiet and authenticity ensure that your holiday in the heart of nature will be a truly unforgettable one!
