Created in 1976 and long directed by the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, the Evian Musical Encounters will be held this year from 30 June to 7 July. It's a classical music festival on the shores of Lake Geneva.
Experiencing a concert during the Evian Musical Encounters is not only the chance to listen to the greatest chamber music musicians in the world perform live, it’s also an opportunity to discover the incredible acoustics of a unique sound room, the “Grange au Lac”.
Inaugurated on May 20, 1993 by the Minister of Culture Jacques Toubon, the 1120-seat room is made solely of cedar and pine and the backdrop populated by a birch forest. A huge carapace of aluminum, in petals of aluminum alloy, thrusts from the ceiling to ensure perfect acoustics.
Concerts at Grange au Lac and in the Casino Theater
The 2018 edition of the Evian Musical Encounters will put Russia in the spotlight. From Glinka to Shostakovich, from Rachmaninov to Gubaidulina, the festival explores all the musical faces of the Russian sub-continent. The Hagen Quartet, the Zimmermann Trio, James Ehnes, Nikolai Lugansky, among others, will perform these auditory looks.
Most concerts are held in the “Grange au Lac” but some will be organized in the Casino Theater: a beautiful room of 850 people, however less exceptional than the first one.
