The Odyssey of Cinema in Nice

The famous Victorine Studios in Nice are celebrating their 100th anniversary in 2019—this is an ideal opportunity for you to visit for the capital of the Côte d’Azur and discover their devotion to the cultural and artistic importance of cinema. Action!

Les Enfants du Paradis by Marcel Carné, La Nuit Américaine by François Truffaut, Le Mystère Picasso by Henri-Georges Clouzot or La Baie des Anges by Jacques Demy—some of the greatest masterpieces of the French cinema have been filmed in the heights of Nice in the Victorine Studios, under the sun of the Côte d’Azur.
Founded in 1919, over 800 movies have been filmed here, including international hits such as Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief. To properly celebrate their centenary, “Nice 2019 – The Odyssey of Cinema” has arranged many rendezvous throughout the year in association with the Biennale des Arts.

Exhibitions up in the lights

The program, festive and abundant, proposes at least seven exhibitions in the largest museums of Nice (MAMAC, Marc Chagall National Museum, Masséna Museum, Museum of Photography, and more). Thus, from September 19, 2019 to January 5, 2020, the Matisse Museum will hold "Cinématisse", an exhibition exploring the relationship of the artist with the seventh art. At 109, the pole of contemporary culture of Nice, the artist Ben will be in the center stage from June 14 to September 28.

Another must-see event in September is the Portes Ouvertes (“Open door”) Day organized at Victorine to discover the studios behind the scenes. Retrospectives, activations and conferences—in total, over 80 key moments make up the calendar of Nice's cinephile calendar.
Those flying in between May 10 and September 30 will notice that the Nice-Côte d’Azur Airport is also part of the cast. Visitors are greeted by large-format pictures of Léo and Yves Mirkine, friends of the greatest stars, and photographs on the set of over 150 feature films. This exhibition, entitled La Victorine dans l’œil des Mirkine (“Victorine in the eyes of the Mirkines”), will also be presented in the heart of Nice, on Promenade du Paillon.
