Lyon Dance Biennale

Sysyphe Heureux (Happy Sysyphus)- François Veyrunes, 2018

Inaugurated in 1984, Lyon Dance Biennial takes place concurrently with a biennale of contemporary art. The 18th edition runs from September 11 to September 30, 2018.

Every two years, Lyon beats to the rhythm of contemporary dance and welcomes a host of dancers and choreographers from all over the world for this fifteen-day long event. The 2018 edition highlights the bridge between dance and the digital arts.

This year, the Biennale will hold 42 shows, including 27 first time productions and French premieres. A weekend of performances in public spaces is on the agenda for the occasion of European Heritage Days. Pride of place will go to amateurs: on September 16, 4,500 dancers will participate in "a Parade for Peace". The finale, held in Place Bellecour, will be a performance of Passants, orchestrated by Yoann Bourgeois, and a choreographed tarantella with 300 amateur choristers giving their rendition of Imagine, John Lennon’s universal peace anthem. Taking place in the heart of Lyon, this is an event not to be missed!

Biennale de la danse de Lyon 2018 2

Another highlight of 2018 is Bipied, a major work by Merce Cunningham for real and virtual dancers, it will take place on September 13 and 14. Mourad Merzouki, Angelin Preljocaj and Rachid Ouramdane are also in the spotlight.

The Biennial unfolds in 43 districts of Lyon metropolis as well as across the region.
