Each French region has its own economic personality. Here is a small survey of the main ones.
If we divided economic France into regions, it is largely dominated by a few of them, and principally by the Ile-de-France. In real terms, the latter produces almost 30% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP).
Rhône-Alpes, with a GDP that is a third as large as that of the Ile-de-France, takes second place. In the face of massive deindustrialisation, this region has put its money on the service sector, which now provides most of its employment (56% of private sector jobs). Another notable fact is that the region is the leader in terms of competitiveness centres (15 of the 71 accredited projects in France).
The strong points of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, the third region in terms of GDP, are external trade, due to the port of Marseille and tourism, especially on the Côte d'Azur.
The other regions also have their specific features. For example, the Nord-Pas-de-Calais, where the service sector is also playing an increasing role, is home to the major mail order and tele-shopping brands and the distribution industry. In the Pays de la Loire, productive capacity has been strengthened in niche markets with higher added value, especially business and financial services. In addition, the region is in second place (behind Brittany) for agriculture and sea fishing. As for Aquitaine, France's fifth largest economic region has developed an important wood sector, whilst at the same time producing and exporting wines renowned for their quality.
