France has applied for the Chauvet Grotto in the Ardèche and the “Climats du vignoble de Bourgogne” (Burgundy vineyards) to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The decision will be given in June 2012.

Chauvet Grotto - cultural site

Discovered in the Ardèche in 1994, the Chauvet Grotto is a human and archaeological gem with exceptional rock paintings. Dating from between 25,000 and 37,000 years ago, they are amongst the oldest known paintings in the world. According to the Culture Minister, the Chauvet Grotto "is one of the most remarkable and fascinating examples of cave artwork". It has been proposed as a cultural site.

The Burgundy vineyards – cultural landscape

The "Climats du vignoble de Bourgogne", with "their enclosures, murgers (internal vineyard  walls) and characteristic construction associated with the cities of Dijon and Beaune", are to be proposed as cultural landscapes. " The prestige, diversity and finesse of the wines ensure a world-wide reputation for the French landscape and way of life ", say those supporting the application.
Applications for both sites will be considered in Saint Petersburg, Russia in June.
