You can make your stay a sustainable one through your choice of travel, accommodation and consumption. The City has many ways for you to explore Paris whilst still being kind to the environment.
What is sustainable tourism?
Sustainable tourism is aimed at the careful use of local resources. In addition to environmental protection, it also involves a different approach to travel, minimising the impact on the environment. The City of Paris has a commitment to this approach, and was ranked in the top 10 green cities in Europe in 2009.
Responsible travel
The public transport network in Paris is extremely efficient, and the self-service “Velib” bike initiative enables you to move around the capital producing hardly any CO2 emissions. Vogueo, the first public river shuttle, also offers you the chance to cross the city … on the river Seine!
Eco-accommodation
Many hotels have opted for the sustainable development approach, involving the environmental management of water, waste and energy and providing more eco-friendly guest products (shower gel, shampoo…). They are identifiable from labels such as the European Eco-label, the Clé Verte and the Green Globe.
Ethical and organic consumption
There are many places in the capital where you can sample delicious food made from organic ingredients. Generally speaking, organic and ethical products are widely available across Paris: cosmetics, textiles… Many shops sell original – and sustainable - souvenirs.
