On 31 March 2011, the ‘Lagoon Island’ of Mayotte will officially become France’s 5th Overseas Department and the 101st French department.

On 29 March 2009, in the referendum to decide whether or not Mayotte should become a French department, 95.24 % of the Mahorais people voted "yes". Therefore on 31 March 2011, after the cantonal elections, Mayotte, which was up until now a French Overseas Collectivity, will become a one-of-a-kind collectivity, both a department and a region, governed by article 73 of the Constitution. It will have a single executive body and a single assembly (serving as both the general and regional council).

The institutional change has been made and will be pursued according to the ‘Pact for departmentalisation’, which has been accepted by the elected representatives of Mayotte. French common law will gradually be applied in this new department through a series of legal orders. The French General Tax Code will come into force from 2014.
