François Hollande was elected President of the French Republic on 6 May 2012, making him the seventh President of the Fifth Republic.

François Hollande was elected President of the French Republic for a term of five years after the second round of the Presidential Election on Sunday 6 May. This makes the candidate for the Socialist Party and the radical left the seventh President of the Fifth Republic.

From a little over 46 million registered voters, François Hollande received 51.62 % of the vote (18,000,438 votes) and Nicolas Sarkozy, 48.38 % (16,869,371 votes).

The participation rate was 80.34 % (37,016,982 voters).The abstention rate was 19.66 %, whereas blank or spoiled votes accounted for 5.80 % of voters.

The final results will be officially declared by the Constitutional Council.
