François Mitterrand (1916-1996)

Narrowly losing the 1974 election, François Mitterrand was elected president of ...France in 1981 and re-elected in 1988. His two seven-year terms in office were marked by the abolition of the death penalty and the modernisation of the penal code. He also went on to play a key role in European recovery.
