The son of a teacher from Cantal who studied at the École Normale Supérieure ...(1931), came first in the Agrégation (teachers' recruitment exam) in Literature (1934) and graduated from Social and Politic Sciences, Pompidou started off teaching at Lycée Henri IV secondary school in Paris.

Upon the death of President Pompidou before the end of his term in office, ...Valéry Giscard d'Estaing put himself forward and subsequently ended up succeeding the president on 19th May 1974. His one-liner “Vous n'avez pas le monopole du cœur” (you do not have the monopoly of heart) to the left-wing candidate François Mitterrand made a big impression.
